Wayne Rooney was drafted into the Manchester United dressing room by Louis van Gaal to
deliver the pre-match team talk in the win over Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday. The United manager called on his captain to provide inspiration for his team-mates, despite non-playing squad members usually not being allowed in the changing rooms, according to Manchester Evening News.
Whatever Rooney said to rally his
colleagues seemed to work wonders as the Red Devils sealed a vital 1-0
win on their rivals’ home ground, a result which leaves them just one
point behind their neighbours in blue.
Marcus Rashford scored his third Premier League goal in four games in the first half, a strike which ultimately settled the tie as City failed to break down the United defence.
It was not the first time van Gaal has asked Rooney to deliver a rousing message to the rest of the team before a game; the striker provided a speech ahead of the 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, a talk which involved Rooney asking van Gaal to actually vacate the room, the newspaper reports.

The United manager has come under much
scrutiny this season for his side’s failure to create many chances and
deliver the kind of attacking football the Old Trafford faithful are
used to watching. Despite this, the Red Devils have kept in contention
for a European spot and now seem like they might snatch the final
Champions League qualification place at City’s expense.
Rooney will be hoping to be back involved in the United side before too long, but it seems his worth off the pitch is proving just as valuable as on it at present, and with Rashford’s form leading the line, it may be difficult for the England captain to break back into the side.
