Questions have already been asked in the lead-up to Liverpool v
Manchester United tonight over the official
who will be in charge of proceedings for the “English Clasico” – referee Carlos Velasco.
The Spanish referee has picked up a reputation as a card happy referee.
In the last 10 games Velasco has officiated the Spaniard has handed out six reds and 63 yellows.
Some of Velasco’s recent numbers are eye watering and are a serious warning for the players of Liverpool and Manchester United.
During Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at PSG in the Champions League first leg, Velasco handed out five yellow cards – this is the joint least amount he has dished out in the past 10 games.
During Valencia’s 1-1 draw with Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg, Velasco gave out “just” six yellow cards.
To say it will almost certainly be a fiery affair when Liverpool face Manchester United tonight is an understatement.
A cracking atmosphere is expected before kick off with both sides calling on their fans respectively. Liverpool have called upon their supporters to arrive at Anfield early and Manchester United have provided their fans with white shirts for a “White Wall.”
With Velasco in charge an early sending off could well shape the whole tie… If that is the case, expect some angry managers after the game.
Perhaps UEFA should have given more careful thought to the officials for Liverpool v Manchester United?
