Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs has reportedly lost complete faith in winger Memphis
Depay.According to Neil Ashton in the Sun, the Welshman "is said to despair of Memphis," and he was given little encouragement by the Dutchman's "uninterested" display as a 76th-minute substitute in Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
A £31 million signing from PSV Eindhoven last summer, Memphis, 22, has showed flashes of brilliance—mainly in European competition—but has been hugely disappointing in the main for a player with such potential.
Memphis previously hailed Giggs this season for giving him help and advice as he looks to make improvements, per Sky Sports' Jack Wilkinson.
However, the Netherlands international has failed to nail down a first-team spot with the Red Devils—he has started only 14 of United's 32 Premier League games this season—and scored just two goals in the English top flight, per WhoScored.com.
For a player who top-scored in the Eredivisie last season with 22 goals, that is a hugely disappointing return.
If Giggs has indeed lost faith in Memphis it could be fatal to his Old Trafford future, as reports have suggested the former winger will take over from current manager Louis van Gaal in the summer, per Simon Mullock in the Mirror.
The other widely-rumoured option to replace Van Gaal is Jose Mourinho, with Bleacher Report's Dean Jones backing the former Chelsea boss to engineer an improvement at the Old Trafford club:
However, the Portuguese would be unlikely to warm to Memphis either.
Mourinho historically demands all of his players to work very hard and that his wingers track back to help in a defensive capacity.
Memphis has not shown this season that he has the ability or the inclination to play in such a way, preferring to remain in an advanced role in attack.
He is still a young player and has displayed at times that he could become a top-class star. However, it seems Memphis' attitude needs to change if he is to have a future at the Manchester club.
