With a contract running out in June 2017, SportBild are obsessed with Mats Hummels’ future at Borussia
Dortmund and had another update on Thursday, having spoken to his agent and dad.
Hermann Hummels explained his son was
facing an extremely important decision in his life, and with Dortmund
being one of the top clubs in Europe again, it wasn’t an easy one.
Stating if he were to leave, he would
only be able to join one of five or six clubs to make a step in the
right direction, Hummels Sr. included Bayern Munich in the discussions.
The German centre-back most certainly
wouldn’t be the first footballer to make the leap from Dortmund to
Bayern Munich in recent years, following in the footsteps of Mario Götze
and Robert Lewandowski, and it wouldn’t be his first time there either.
Hummels, despite spending the past seven
years of his life at Dortmund, actually started his career at Bayern
Munich, moving to der BVB in 2009 following a loan spell there, well
before they became a threat to the Bavarians.
SportBild report Bayern Munich tried to
keep him when Louis van Gaal took over, and talks took place over a
deal, with the Dutchman keen to sort one out.
Now linked with a move to Manchester
United, it shouldn’t be surprising to see the Dutch manager chasing a
player he missed the opportunity to work with seven years ago, and
Hummels would be the ideal candidate to strengthen an imbalanced Red
Devil defence.
The German magazine mention Louis Van
Gaal’s side and Chelsea as those from the Premier League wanting to sign
Hummels, and we’re as intrigued as you to find out what the player’s
decision will be.
Tom Coast.
