Manchester United have completed the signing of teenage full-back Lee O’Connor from Villa FC, the Irish
Independent has confirmed.
The 15-year-old is considered one of the
brightest talents in the Republic of Ireland, captaining the under-16
national team and also making the step up to under-17 level.
O’Connor received the FAI under-15 Player of the Year award recently.
The youngster is an attacking full-back who will officially join Manchester United in July.
Lee O’Connor will being full-time training with Nick Butt’s academy side.
Manchester United have signed a number
of youngster’s from the Republic of Ireland in the past but the only
other Irish academy player at the club is James Dunne.
Whether Louis van Gaal will still be in
charge when O’Connor joins up with his new teammates remains to be
seen. There are widely-spread suggestions that José Mourinho will
replace the Dutch manager over the summer even if van Gaal finishes in
the top four and wins the FA Cup.
United are in cup action this weekend
when they take on Everton in the semi-final, whilst they are only one
point off the UEFA Champions League places following their 2-0 win over
Crystal Palace last night.
