Ryan Giggs has stressed the importance of Manchester United bringing through youth players amid talk of potential world-class signings this summer.
Louis van Gaal has introduced Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford to regular first-team football at Old Trafford this season and the United youth graduates have excelled in the manager’s starting line-up.The 20-time English champions have been linked with big-money moves for Tottenham striker Harry Kane, Paris Saint-Germain forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Everton star Romelu Lukaku in recent weeks.
However, Van Gaal’s assistant manager Giggs has emphasised the importance of trusting United’s youth players to perform for the three-time European champions in the first-team.
“It’s part of the history, it’s what sets us apart from other teams,” Giggs told United’s website.
“Yes, we can bring world-class players in from around the world but we want one of our own to be performing on that Old Trafford pitch, whether it’s a centre-forward, a winger or a defender.
“We need players to come through the ranks. That’s a massive part of the United history.”
United were 1-0 winners against Manchester City in the derby at the Etihad Stadium earlier this month after Rashford’s 16th-minute winner.
