have confirmed.
The 41-year-old has already held roles as reserve team coach and coach of the under-19s since linking up with the club again in 2012.
Butt was also briefly assistant to caretaker manager Ryan Giggs at the end of the 2013/14 season, and his appointment could be welcomed by fans concerned about the club’s current direction under Louis van Gaal.
Perceived as losing their identity and moving away from their traditions since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, Butt’s presence in the youth team could help restore some of that success that saw he and other big names rise through the ranks to become key players at Old Trafford.
