Van Gaal has revealed he also has his doubts about Martial.
"We don’t know (Martial's best position) yet because he played always in Monaco as a left winger, as
manager I have to see what is the best balance in the team," the Dutchman said.
"That's not so simple, so I have to decide every week dependable on the game plan and qualities of opponent, and so on. In Monaco he
played more or less always on the left wing."
When discussing Arsenal's interest in Martial before United swooped for him, Wenger said: "We [have] known him since he was a kid.
"But he's more of a winger-type.
"He's an exceptional talent I agree with you but I believe that he plays in positions where we have players like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alexis Sanchez and Joel Campbell who can play in the position."
Those comments caused Martial's representative Philippe Lamboley to hit back, saying: "Anthony is a true modern centre-forward who can play a part.
"I am surprised by the analysis of Arsene Wenger, who has apparently been following him since he was a teenager.
"If the analysis Arsene Wenger has made is in order to justify not having signed Anthony, I accept he is a winger. But in football, there are those who follow players and those who buy them."
