Tottenham continue to keep tabs on Saido Berahino, Moussa Dembele and Michy Batshuayi as they
consider back-up for Harry Kane this summer.
Even if Spurs qualify for the Champions League — and as they are nine points clear of fifth-placed Manchester United with eight games remaining, they really should — Kane will play in all the big games, if fit. The conundrum for Spurs is that they need a high-class replacement in case he is not.
Berahino remains a target and Spurs may move for him again at the end of the season, even though chairman Daniel Levy has yet to push the matter forward with his West Brom counterpart, Jeremy Peace.
Moussa Dembele, the Fulham forward, had a medical with Spurs in January before the move broke down at the last minute, yet the 19-year-old is still thought to be a target, as he will be out of contract in the summer. He does, however, have interest from abroad, notably from Monaco, Wolfsburg and Benfica.
Marseille forward Michy Batshuayi has been admired by Spurs since his days with Belgian club Standard Liege. The 22-year-old has scored 21 times for the French club this term.
Yet if Batshuayi had no guarantees about a starting place, he might think twice about joining a club where Kane is so clearly the main man. Whatever Kane’s involvement against Dortmund, he is central to Tottenham’s present and future.
