Payet scored his 11th goal of the season in the FA Cup quarter-final
as his extraordinary free-kick beat De
Gea from all of 30 yards at Old Trafford, and sent West Ham’s 9000 supporters crazy in the away end.
Unfortunately for Payet and his team-mates, Anthony Martial grabbed a late equaliser to send the tie into a replay at the Boleyn Ground – the last ever cup tie to be played on the ground – and he’s admitted that he wasn’t sure he could beat the Spaniard from the distance he was hitting the free-kick.

“I said to myself that even if I hit
the free-kick well, right in a corner, with a goalkeeper like David de
Gea it’s still difficult to score,” Payet told the BBC. “I had a bit of
luck in that it hit the post on the way in.
“It was one of the best free-kicks I’ve scored, and to score in this stadium which I think is one of the most beautiful in the league…It’s a great day for me.”

Payet’s free-kick was perfectly curled
up and over the wall and onto the post, just out of reach of De Gea, who
has proven himself on more than enough occasions over the past two
years that he’s one of the best goalkeepers in world football.
Last week, against Liverpool, he made two world class saves at Anfield to deny the Reds from extending their Europa League lead, but he was no match for Payet’s free-kick which had Hammers fans inside Old Trafford and down in London dreaming of a Wembley appearance in the semi-finals.

Payet scored a free-kick in the last round
against Blackburn Rovers too and he’ll be hoping to score for a third
FA Cup game in a row when United travel to Upton Park to face the
Hammers.
