FIFA have today announced that
they will trial the use of a fourth substitute in upcoming
tournaments later this year, including at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The potential new ruling, which was made by the International Football Association Board, will mean that teams will be able to make a fourth substitution in a match if it goes to extra time and the Olympics will be the first major tournament where it is trialled.

Other competitions that will trial it are
the Women’s Under-20 World Cup which is scheduled to take place in Papua
New Guinea in October and November and the Club World Championship in
December.
This is one of the first new rulings
brought in by the new FIFA president Gianni Infantino and also high on
the agenda for the new FIFA president is reforming the game following
the damaging Sepp Blatter era.
It will certainly be interesting to see how the ruling impacts the upcoming tournaments later this year and whether its implementation will become widespread in the game if successful.
One potential difference it could make is if teams want to bring an extra penalty taker onto the pitch in extra-time which could make shootouts even more of a spectacle while it will also minimise the likelihood of injured players having to play on.
The Rio Olympics will take place in August and is made up of 16 different national teams spread out across six separate confederations.
