Manchester United are rumoured to be interested in selling Captain Wayne Rooney to the
Chinese Super League after a mega bid was supposedly received by the club.
According to reports an unnamed Chinese team want to bring the England captain to the Super League although United deny any bid has been received.
If as expected Manchester United appoint Jose Mourinho as manager, he is unlikely to want to lose Rooney as he tried to sign him for Chelsea and is a known admirer of the striker.
In 2010 Rooney made his first attempt to leave United after a falling out with Alex Ferguson and his annoyance that United were not in for the big players slamming United’s lack of ambition. Ferguson claimed in his book that Rooney wanted United to sign Mesut Ozil before the German signed for Real Madrid.
Again in 2013 after another reported fallout with Sir Alex Ferguson in the bosses final season in charge, he reportedly asked to leave again. It was left to new manager David Moyes to convince him to stay. Moyes urged Rooney to become a United legend.
He is already a United legend. He has won 5 Premier League titles, 1 Champions League and 2 League cups. His performances have declined massively over the past 2-3 seasons and his recent return to form has been halted by yet another injury.
Rooney turns 31 this year and one feels that it is United’s last chance to cash in, and a chance for him to try something new. He has a testimonial arranged this August against Everton which would be a fitting way to bring the curtain down on an incredible career at United.
After a bad few years since Sir Alex Ferguson left, United need to get it right in the transfer window this summer. Rooney can no longer be the main striker at United anymore, unpredictable form and declining goal return is proof that Anthony Martial or a new striker is the way forward for United up front next season.
Mata or Herrera are better options in the number ten role, and if United invest in the areas of the team as they should this summer, Rooney could be edged out.
The testimonial is the perfect way for Rooney and United to depart. One would hate to see him finish his days at United failing to contribute in the way he would want. He hasn’t contributed in the way he would want for the past few seasons.
Part of the mess United are in at the moment is due to the club holding onto successful players too long. Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville were all at United too long. United missed out on some seriously talented players because we had those players still at the club. They have failed to replace them even now. Roy Keane left in 2005 and he has still to be replaced. Gary Neville was still playing at the club when it was obvious to everyone his days as a player were over.
Football is a business after all, and you should always look to enhance your business. This writer would hate Rooney to end up as a bit part player remembering the glory days as he sits on the bench. At 31, it is time for Rooney to try something new, whether that be in China or where ever.
United then can appoint a new manager, a new captain and try to move on from this disastrous period since Sir Alex departed. Rooney would get a fitting departure from United in front of his Manchester United and Everton fans.
