United will really miss Matteo Darmian against Stoke City Tuesday night. There’s an injury crisis in the back line still ongoing. Guillermo Varela could make just his second Premier League start tonight.

Yes, look at the list of defenders who will be absent- Matteo Darmian (chest), Ashley Young (groin), Marcos Rojo (shoulder), Antonio Valencia (foot), Phil Jones (ankle) and Luke Shaw (leg). Young isn’t a defender really, but he’s had to be a fill-in starter there on numerous occasions.

Varela isn’t the only relatively obscure youngster starting in the back. Cameron Borthwick-Jackson will probably get the call again. Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is also unavailable.
